Albarino meets Thai at Harold Dieterle’s New Spot, Kin Shop

Albarino meets Thai at Harold Dieterle’s

New Spot, Kin Shop

Grapes, Grapes, Grapes

Grapes, Grapes, Grapes

After a fierce over-indulgence of turkey and all the fixins for Thanksgiving, my wife (aka Mrs. Z), and I tried a new joint on Sixth Ave and 11th street. The place is called Kin Shop and it serves contemporary Thai food, prepared by Top Chef Season 1 Winner, Harold Dieterle.

We were excited by the prospect of having two Albariño wines for us to enjoy while we tasted the innovative Thai food. Kin Shop does not dazzle in the decor category, but the food rocks.

I Love Albarino wines and Thai Food~ Whooopie!

I Love Albarino wines and Thai Food~ Whooopie!

Some of our favorite appetizers
included:

* Spicy (on fire) Duck Laab Salad with toasted rice, ground Chili and Romaine Hearts.
Note - if spicy food scares you, stay away.

* Fried Pork and Crispy Oyster salad with celery, peanuts, mint and chili-lime vinaigrette. This dish is brilliant!

* The Selection of grilled eggplant with rice pearls, fish sauce and mint was superb.

Our first bottle to go with the apps was the 2009 Pazo de Senorans Albariño. I have to say, it went perfectly with the Thai chili spices and the fish sauce. The high quality of 2009 vintage in Rías Baixas had hints of lemon, Granny Smith apple and was perfectly crisp and cold. I must say the bottle and the food were a match made in heaven.

For our entrees, we had:

* Stir fried Aquatic Veggies, which included Chinese water spinach, water chestnuts and watercress. Light, clean and refreshing!

* Massaman Goat with purple yams and toasted coconut had just enough spice, not to over power the 2nd bottle of wine

* Pan fried Crab noodles with yellow chive, chili and Tatsoi - yummy and spice!

With the entrees, we enjoyed a bottle of the 2009 Santiago Ruiz. It was a bit more floral than the Pazo, but was equally as delicious! It had a great balance and we also picked up a Granny Smith hint as well. Both of these Albariños work very well with anything coming off of the grill, including grilled fish, vegetables and chicken, but we must say, we would be happy to have them along side a meat dish as well.

All in all our experience at Kin Shop paired with Albariño was a match made in heaven. We can’t wait to do it all over again!
