The Painted Dogs are Coming to Columbia County this Summer
Hudson, NY – Get ready for the painted dogs this summer! Starting July 4th weekend, the City of Hudson will host its first ever public art exhibition. Sponsored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and the Columbia County Council on the Arts, Best in Show 2008 will feature over 60 artist decorated fiberglass dogs displayed on steel pedestals throughout the Hudson Business District. The exhibition opens during the “dog days” of summer on July 4th weekend and runs until October 8th, 2008.
The painted dogs, seated and standing, are 25 inches tall and highlight the work of local artists. Each canine displays a unique, inventive personality bestowed upon them by the artist and are sure to delight dog enthusiasts of all ages! All dogs carry plaques and are identified by name, the name of the artist and local business sponsor. Various contests, dog themed theatrical and performance events are planned throughout the summer. Visit www.hudsonbestinshow.com for more information.
The exhibition closes October 8th in preparation for the Dog Gone! Gala Benefit Auction on Sunday, October 12th . The colorful canines go to the highest bidders at the Gala Auction Brunch. Proceeds from the auction will benefit local charities.
Public Arts Displays have been a huge success across the nation. These events boost tourism and support buy local initiatives in the area. Cat'n Around Catskill was very successful last year with their first public art display in Catskill, NY. Pittsfield has adorned their streets with sheep and Saratoga has shown off their heritage with horses. Similar projects have taken place in Vermont, Kentucky, Texas, Montana and California.
Due to the success of the public art display in Catskill last year, members of the Chamber and Arts Council encouraged the organizers to bring the same idea to Columbia County. The Chamber and Arts Council are natural partners as they represent the business and arts community of Columbia County.
After careful consideration the dogs were chosen to spark a friendly rivalry with the cats in Catskill. A joint marketing campaign between Columbia and Greene Counties has been launched to draw even more tourists to the area this summer. Thousands came by car and tour bus to see the Cats in Catskill last summer and local residents also enjoyed casting a ballot for their favorite cat last summer. Now they will be able to search for their favorite cat and dog! Public participation is highly encouraged and there will be an opportunity to vote for their favorite dog and purchase them at the Auction & Gala in October!
