On September 4th 2001, Carolyn and I landed at Charles De Gaulle airport at around 9am, Paris time. I was so excited to ask her if she would be my bride, I could barely keep it together. She was exhausted and wanted to take a nap.............I said sorry, we have things to do. We walked to the Trocadéro and I quickly asked the future Mrs. Z to marry me. Of course she said yes. The following 7 days were pure bliss. Lots of great wine, food, laughing and taking in everything that Paris has to offer. We even hit the famous Laduree for some tasty treats. On September 11th, 2001 at around 2:45pm Paris time, Carolyn was on a pay phone talking to her mom, who was in New York. As they were speaking at 100 miles per minute in Spanish, my future mother in law suddenly said that a plane just hit one of the World Trade Center Buildings. At first, we thought she was joking. We didn’t realize that in a split second, our country and the world would never be the same!
Our experience was so surreal, compared to the New Yorkers that saw the horror right in front of their naked eyes.
We solute all of the firemen, police officers, EMS squads and volunteers that performed at the highest level during this tragedy. Your heart and hard work will always be in our heart and we are eternally grateful.
As for the people that lost their lives; I can only hope that your families will always remember you and have become stronger and more united because of your absence.
